Celebrating 100 Years of Memories at YMCA Camp Kitchikewana

October 3rd, 2017 by YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka

2019 marks Camp Kitchikewana’s (Kitchi) 100th anniversary and the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka has launched its countdown to the big event. Over the past couple of years, the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka has been hosting yearly “decade reunions” for all its fellow alumni campers, staff, volunteers and friends of Camp Kitchi. These events give our alumni the opportunity to connect with fellow campers and staff from their camp “era,” who they may not have seen in years. Last year we hosted the 1940s—1970s decade reunion and this past weekend we hosted the 1980’s decade reunion. So far the feedback has been tremendous.

For over 95 years, YMCA Camp Kitchi has been offering traditional summer camp programs for youth ages 6 to 16 in July and August and programs for all ages in the spring and fall seasons. Located on Beausoleil Island in the beautiful Georgian Bay Islands National Park, YMCA Camp Kitchi’s mission is to challenge youth to be the very best that they can be. Through a range of skills, outdoor activities and interactions with others, campers are encouraged to challenge themselves while building self-confidence, having fun, and creating lasting friendships.

Since it opened its doors in 1919, Camp Kitchi has modernized its facilities, adding new cabins, washrooms, docks, sailboats, canoes and a state of the art kitchen. In addition to the traditional programs including land and water activities, the camp also offers overnight canoe trips, a high school credit program, school group outdoor education and volunteer programs.

Camp Kitchi is a great opportunity for children to explore their imagination, learn new skills and allow them to just be “kids.” All YMCA camps nurture spirit, mind and body of every child, which make up the three sides of the YMCA’s triangle logo.  Campers who have been taught to focus on their spirit, mind and body, as well as other YMCA tenets such as respect, responsibility, caring for others and honesty, will have an advantage in life that will serve them well, no matter where they go or whom they meet.

The YMCA Camp Kitchikewna is owned and operated by the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka. Our YMCA serves the Simcoe County, District of Muskoka and Parry Sound communities.

Whether you’re an alumni or new to the Camp Kitchi family, we hope you’ll join us in celebrating our 100th anniversary!
