Vision 2020: Planning Today for a Better Tomorrow

October 25th, 2017 by YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka

More than a health and fitness centre, the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka prides itself on developing a unique ‘Centre of Community.’ Over the past five years, the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka has demonstrated tremendous success in supporting our community needs and achieving the goals laid out in the previous five-year strategic plan – My Y for Good, 2012-2017. In 2012 the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka engaged 1,300 stakeholders in the development of a five-year strategic plan. Here are some of our accomplishments:

Vision 2020 – addressing the needs of our community today

At this year’s YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka’s Annual General Meeting held on October 23, 2017, our strategic plan and vision for the next three years was announced – Vision 2020. This is an important time for planning, as we face such issues as demographic shifts, affordable housing, youth unemployment, and increased obesity rates in children and adults. The communities of Simcoe, Muskoka, and Parry Sound are facing new challenges today that present new opportunities for My Y to lead:

  • Since 2011, the population of Simcoe/Muskoka has grown by 7.5%
  • Our largest urban centre (Barrie) is one of the youngest in Ontario; the median age in many of our other communities is older than the rest of the Province
  • 70% of people in our community perceive their mental health to be very good or excellent compared to 75% in 2011
  • 63% of adults aged 18+ are overweight or obese compared to 60% in 2011
  • The number of people on Social Housing Wait Lists in Simcoe/Muskoka has increased by 24% since 2011
  • The average price of a house in Barrie and the surrounding district has more than doubled since 2011
  • Youth unemployment rates in our community have dropped from 20% to 16% since 2011

Vision 2020 is an extension of My Y For Good, addressing the needs of our community today and planning for how we can address them tomorrow. Vision 2020 builds upon the same themes with a slight adaptation to the “Inspiring Youth” strategic direction, to better reflect the work the Y does to strengthen families. Vision 2020 focuses on the following priorities:

  • Philanthropic Development
  • Organizational Culture
  • Capital Investment

By concentrating on these areas of focus, My Y will:

  • Improve the quality of health for children, youth and families
  • Instill a sense of community belonging for all
  • Make certain that My Y is a community partner for life

It’s up to us to create and cultivate strong communities. At the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka, we will continue to work hard to develop an organizational culture that understands and serves our communities. As a cornerstone of health in the community, we intend to continue to focus on engaging our community by working collaboratively with individuals, community groups and organizations to achieve mutually agreed goals that build capacity, improve wellbeing, produce sustainable outcomes and ultimately, build stronger communities.

Thank you for supporting and believing in the YMCA. We hope that you will continue to join us on our exciting journey ahead.
