Educational Modules | YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka

Module 1: StrengthsQuest Self-Assessment

Melissa Gallo (Humber College)

Do you have the opportunity to do what you do best every day? Learn how your talents can help you develop personally and professionally. StrengthsQuest is designed to help individuals learn ways to leverage their talents at work and in life, which can help them become more engaged, productive, and successful. Participants will have access to the Clifton Strength Finder assessment tool, personal strengths report and access to web resources. Each participant will receive a copy of the StrengthsQuest book with their program registration.

Module 2: Leadership Communication

Frank Cappadocia, MA (Lakehead University)

Like leadership, communication is an art; it is also a practice and, as such, requires intention and dedication before mastery can be achieved. In order to become better leaders, we must all become better communicators. The positive impact of improved communication is tremendous and ultimately results in improvements of both small and large measure. This workshop will provide participants with an excellent overview of communication approaches, methods and research within a practice-rich environment. This workshop is based in part on Dr. Peter Jensen’s Coaching Leadership Model which will be referenced throughout the session. Communication Methods, Mediums and Outcomes will also be reviewed within the framework of face-to-face and non-verbal communication styles.

Module 3: Transformational Leadership

Frank Cappadocia, MA (Lakehead University)

There are as many approaches to leading as there are leaders themselves. Those leaders who seek to make a major change are known as “Transformational” and this workshop will provide aspiring change agents with the ability to relate to the key factors impacting leadership today. Using those same factors, participants will be able to demonstrate four behaviours that apply to the role of a leader. Participants will apply the definition of leadership to the transformational leadership theme while exploring the differences between transformational and transactional leadership styles. By the end of this workshop, participants will have been given an opportunity to demonstrate at least three critical factors of transformational leadership while examining the differences between charismatic and transformational leadership. This session will wrap up with an examination of organizational culture and its influence on transformational leadership approaches.

Module 4: Strategic Planning

• Community Impact

Module 5: Team Effectiveness

Fiona Cascagnette (YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka)

For an organization to operationalize its mission and vision to achieve optimal impact in the communities we serve, a team has to learn to work together. This interactive session will focus on the various stages of group development and team dynamics with a focus on maximizing group effectiveness as a means to achieving common goals.
