Staying Hydrated: Fact vs. Fiction

How much water do you need to drink each day?

We’ve all heard this fact before: Up to 60% of the human body is made of water. Along with eating right and exercising, keeping hydrated is essential to our health and overall well-being — but can we really put a figure on how many cups of water we should be drinking each day?

It’s time to set the record straight: not everybody needs to drink eight glasses per day to stay healthy.

The truth is, each of us is different and so is our daily need for fluids. It’s impossible to assign a number of cups to everybody, because every body is different. Rather than worrying about the number of cups you need to drink each day, think about hydration. Here are some tips to keep you hydrated throughout the day:

  • Drink a glass of water first thing in the morning. Starting your day with a hydration burst will quench the thirst you’ve built up while sleeping and keep you thinking about consuming fluids throughout the day.

  • Water is best, but don’t limit yourself: our bodies can derive hydration from many other liquids — even food, too! Milk, 100% juice, herbal teas and soy beverages are good examples of hydrating liquids. Watch out for liquids high in sugar (think pop). These beverages can actually deplete our bodies of hydration.

  • Limit your caffeine consumption. Caffeine is okay in moderation, but it can dehydrate our bodies if we don’t pay attention to our intake.

  • If you want to spice up your beverages, try infusing your water! Cucumbers or berries make a great addition to any glass. Fill a pitcher with water plus the fruit or veggie of your choosing and let it sit in the fridge overnight. In the morning, you’ll be left with a yummy, hydrating drink!
