Youth Leadership

Junior Leaders (13 – 14 Yrs )
Located at YMCA Geneva Park, this overnight summer leadership program offers youth 13-14 (having completed Grade 7 or 8) an introduction to leadership programs. They will learn about YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka summer programs through active involvement and leadership training. Participants will sleep in tents on site and eat in the dining room.

Young Leaders (15 – 16 Yrs )
Located at YMCA Geneva Park, this program is designed to provide hard skills practice in our program areas of canoeing, kayaking, windsurfing, sailing, swimming, nature, crafts, gym and tennis. The program is designed for soft skills learning and opportunities for 15-16 year olds who are interested in building a solid foundation in leadership. Program components will include conflict resolution, problem solving, communication and decision making. Over the four week program, the Young Leaders will be eligible to receive a Grade 11 Ontario Secondary School Credit (Healthy Active Living Education – Outdoor Education PAD3O) offered by the Simcoe County District School Board, participate in bronze medallion/cross lifesaving lessons and standard first aid with CPR C. This four week program culminates with a canoe trip in Temagami.

Advanced Leaders (16 – 17 Yrs )
Located at YMCA Geneva Park, this program is designed to provide a challenging and personally rewarding leadership development opportunity for 16-17 year olds with prior leadership training experience. Advanced Leaders will work directly with children and adult program participants to practice their teaching and leadership skills. Over the four week program, the Advanced Leaders will be eligible to receive a Grade 11 Ontario Secondary School Credit (Leadership and Peer Support GPP3O) offered by the Simcoe County District School Board, participate in Bronze Medallion/Cross lifesaving lessons, standard first aid with CPR C and culminates with a canoe trip in Georgian Bay.

International Leadership Experience
The YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka provides meaningful opportunities to youth. Fulfill your potential while volunteering at YMCA Fairthorne Manor Camp in the United Kingdom for 4 weeks, experiencing the global perspective and building community. Join youth volunteers from around the world in connecting, supporting and learning from each other this August.

• Dates are August 7th – September 3rd, 2016
• Price is $3800 plus HST
• Ages 16 – 17

Participants receive camp leadership training and spend much of their time in the UK as assistant counsellors in a day camp program. Their free time is spent touring the English countryside. Past excursions have included trips to London, Stonehenge, a soccer match, and more.

Leaders In Training Day Camp (13-15 yrs)
A three week program that will build leadership skills and provide a strong foundation for moving into a future position as camp counselor! Week one will be filled with leadership training and teambuilding initiatives, while the following two weeks will be spent in one of our on-site day camp programs building skills through hands on, experiential learning opportunities in the camp environment. For more information please contact Jared Baillie jared_baillie@ymca.ca 705 726 6421 x 252 .

LEADERSHIP ONE At YMCA Camp Kitchikewna (15 yrs )
Leadership One is the first stage in the YMCA’s residential camp leadership program. This program provides opportunities for participants to build self-esteem and experience personal growth. This four-week experience focuses on skill development, personal leadership and communication. Participants will learn the fundamentals of trip leadership planning through participation in a five-day canoe trip. Program participants will also focus on advanced skill development in one of Sailing (CANSail 3 or 4), Canoeing (Lakewater 1), or Lifesaving (Bronze Medallion or Bronze Cross). Leadership One participants will also have the opportunity to obtain a secondary school credit from certified teachers onsite (Outdoor Education, PAD30) in partnership with the Simcoe/Muskoka Catholic District School Board.

LEADERSHIP TWO at YMCA Camp Kitchikewana (16 yrs )
Leadership Two program has an overall focus on positive community involvement. Some of the topics covered in the program include group dynamics, instructional techniques, counseling skills, camper characteristics and local heritage. A series of placements will allow participants to practice their skills and leadership styles under the supervision of experienced camp staff. Leadership Two participants will also have the opportunity to obtain a secondary school credit from certified teachers onsite (Leadership and Peer Support, GPP30) in partnership with the Simcoe/Muskoka Catholic District School Board.
