Fitting in Fitness: Get Moving at Work

Make small changes to your daily routine to incorporate physical activity.

We live such busy lives: between work, school, spending time with friends and family, and even volunteering in our communities, we often miss out on taking time for ourselves. It’s no surprise that physical fitness is usually the first thing to be left off our list of “to-dos.” Know you’re going to be missing your daily working at MyY Midland? We have some tips that will get you moving during the day, even when you’re stuck at the office:

  • Plan to Stand: Just standing for short periods of time can have a big impact on your health. Breaking up your time spent sitting at a desk will help boost your metabolism and energy levels. Take breaks when you can to stretch your legs and walk around. You’ll find that little breaks of activity will keep you feeling refreshed and awake throughout the day. Set your computer or cell phone alarm to provide you with a reminder to get up and stretch your legs every hour.

  • Take the Path Less Travelled: If you’re a commuter, you know that sitting in the car for long periods of time can make us feel sluggish and stiff. Not only that, but it can add sedentary time to our day. To get some extra movement in, change up your parking routine: rather than hunt for the closest spot, pick one that requires you to walk a longer distance to and from your car.

  • Find Your Off Switch: Sometimes vegging out in front of the TV is all we feel like doing after a long, tiring day, but it’s a bad habit that needs to be broken. We sit all day at our jobs — our evenings should be spent doing a little physical activity to keep our bodies fit and our minds sharp. If you have to sit, limit it to your favourite programs. Pick a TV schedule and stick to it to reduce your sedentary time.

  • Plan to Make Meetings Mobile: For your next face-to-face meeting at the office, consider making it mobile. A walking meeting is a great way to get down to business while working on your fitness. It’s also a way to take advantage of the beautiful spring weather that is headed our way!

Consider incorporating physical activity in your daily work life, to break down the time spent sitting. Committing to small activity changes in your daily routines is a great start on the path to a happier, healthier life.
