June is Seniors’ Month!

YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka celebrates a commitment to healthy aging

In June each year, Ontario celebrates and recognizes the great contributions seniors make to our communities. 2017 marks the 33rd annual Seniors’ Month. This year’s theme is “Living Your Best Life.” At the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka, we celebrate seniors all year long with our various programs aimed at encouraging active living!

It’s never too late to start building a healthy lifestyle. The YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka has a wide variety of senior-friendly group fitness programs to try most days of the week! Here are a few of our popular classes:

On the Move 50+

A fitness class that incorporates cardiovascular and muscle exercise for older adults looking to increase their fitness capabilities.

Chair Yoga

A class that offers a series of sitting, standing and reclining poses, using a chair to help improve flexibility and muscle strength. Modifications are used to accommodate different levels.

This low impact total body workout takes place in the pool and includes aerobic and muscle conditioning exercises.

Gentle Fit

If you have a limiting physical condition that requires a gentler routine, or you’re just beginning an exercise routine, this is the perfect class for you. With a combination of low impact cardiovascular aerobics, Gentle Fit targets large muscle groups in order to build endurance and muscle strength.

Healthy Hearts Program

In partnership with the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH), the Healthy Hearts program provides supervised cardiac prevention and rehabilitation services based on individual needs and goals. The program is designed to help people reduce the risk of heart disease, and improve their health and quality of life.

Seniors Social Groups

A great opportunity for participants to connect with one another during such outings as lunch and learns, gardening sessions, social gatherings and more!

YMCA group fitness classes are a great way to get active, stay healthy and meet new people. All YMCA fitness classes are guided by certified fitness instructors who have been carefully trained to modify exercises according to your needs. I am a senior and want to take my 2.5 year old grandson for a swim in your pool. I am not a member. Is there a charge?

      Hi Dale,

If your grandson is a member, you will be able to accompany them in the pool. If he is not a member, you will need to purchase a day pass for your grandson and will be able to accompany him in the pool. Provided you are there as a guardian for your grandchild in the pool, there is no charge to you. This applies to children who require supervision under our Swim Supervision Policy. Hope this helps!
