Reconnect with Nature at the YMCA Springwater Day Camp

By Jared Baillie, Director of Day Camps, YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka

Does the thought of getting dirt on your hands, and pine cone needles out of your hair sound like fun? For many kids, this is the definition of ultimate fun and something they don’t get enough of these days!

When I was a kid, I was told to “go outside and play” when I got home from school. Today, kids are more likely to have a scheduled indoor play date or they disappear into their room alone and get on their electronic device.

According to Angela Hanscom, a pediatric occupational therapist who writes about the links between time spent in nature and child development – “a disconnect from nature is creating sensory issues in children all over the world. On average, children are spending less time outdoors and more time in buildings than ever before.” We know that when children are connected to their environment, they are healthier and happier. Camp set outdoors provides children with an opportunity to unplug from technology – giving them a much-needed break and a chance to be outside and reconnect to life.

YMCA Day Camp – Get Outdoors!

For many people, a summer camp for kids might appear like nothing more than fun and games. However, our YMCA camp staff will tell you differently. They’ll tell you that camp is a place where invaluable life skills are acquired and nurtured. It’s a unique place for kids to learn and grow. It provides children with different opportunities to develop important life skills that are difficult to achieve in any other environment. Often times, parents will be amazed at the growth and positive changes that occur when their kids come home from camp.

The YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka Springwater Day Camp is the perfect environment for you child to unplug and get outdoors! The camp operates out of Springwater Provincial Park in Midhurst and uses this beautiful land to teach children about the importance of nature in a unique and affordable way. The day is spent outside focusing on nature-based activities including an introduction to mountain biking, orienteering, shelter building, nature hikes, swimming at the local beach, traditional camp activities and so much more.

All YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka day camps focus on impacting the social-emotional, cognitive and physical development of all kids. To ensure a safe and nurturing environment, the counsellor to camper ratio is one senior staff member to 10 campers. The camp runs from July 3 to September 1 and accommodates children ages 6-12. Bus transportation is available from Bradford, Innisfil, Angus, Barrie, Collingwood and Wasaga Beach.

Spending time in nature is essential for kids’ physical and mental health and their appreciation of the natural world – no electronic device can ever replace that! Make this summer a memorable one for your child! Register for the YMCA Springwater Day Camp today!
