Day Camp: The Start of An Unforgettable Summer!

By Grace Burgoyne, YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka Day Camp Staff

It’s week three of Day Camp across the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka, and in this short period of time, we’ve already made wonderful memories, had lots of laughs and created amazing friendships. It’s exciting to think that we have 7 more weeks left to enjoy camp!

For some of the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka day camp locations, the campers climb onto the bus, leaving the hustle and bustle of the city behind and enter a nature oasis.  YMCA Geneva Park (GP) is our largest site, and is located in Orillia on Lake Couchiching. At the end of the week, the campers at GP are given the opportunity to experience camping under the stars. When the busy day is done, the tents go up, the campfire is lit, stories are told, songs are sung and, of course s’mores are enjoyed by all!

At other locations, campers are nestled into a park area under the iconic white day camp tents. Everyone enjoys the start of the day flag pole traditions, and campers get a chance to be silly and join in with staff singing, dancing and chanting along to their favourite camp songs. After flagpole, the campers enjoy different activities planned by our programming staff and led by our counsellors. Activities, such as mad science, field games, arts and crafts, canoeing, archery, sports, nature hikes and of course swimming!

Each Thursday, campers have a special event, day trip or special guest come in to visit the kids. Last week, campers visited Rounds Ranch to give all those cowboys and cowgirls a chance to explore a corn maze, petting zoo, and enjoy a wagon ride. Other special events coming up this summer include Aussie X, Wild World (animal education), In the Mix, bowling, drive-in-theatre, roller-skating, Springwater Conservation Area and more!

On Fridays, campers get to dress up for our theme day! Two weeks ago it was Canada 150, and the campers of Innisfil went all out to demonstrate their love of Canada (see picture below). Last week because campers were headed to Rounds Ranch, the theme was country and western. We’re looking forward to seeing what creative costumes the campers and staff come up with each week!

It’s been an amazing two weeks across all the different YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka camp sites and we invite you to sign your child up for any of the 7 weeks left of camp! Summer is a time for kids to have fun and be active. We believe that

when campers come to our YMCA Day Camps, they’re not only staying active and having fun with their new friends, but they’re also being exposed to the YMCA’s core values – health, honesty, inclusiveness, caring, respect and responsibility. We have amazing programs, staff and of course campers and we invite you to be apart of our Y family.
