Dining Room Assistant Supervisor (Dining Room Lead)

Location: YMCA Geneva Park
Department: Geneva Park Food Service
Placement: Part Time Hourly (full time hours available year round during mid to high business levels)

About the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka:

The YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka currently serves over 125,000 people in Simcoe County and the Districts of Muskoka and Parry Sound in Central Ontario. The YMCA is one of the largest charities within our service area, providing over $1.1 million annually of support and access to our programs and services.

With a staff complement of 1200+ full and part-time staff, combined with over 1,000 volunteers and donors, and an operating budget of $39 million, the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka serves over 30,000 annual members and participants through its eight membership centres in Barrie, Collingwood, Gravenhurst, Innisfil, Midland, Orillia, Parry Sound, and Wasaga Beach; 3,000 Child Care families across a number of communities; registers 5,000 day campers in addition to 1500 overnight campers at YMCA Camp Kitchikewana on Beausoleil Island; over 15,000 people through leadership development, outdoor education and family programs at YMCA Geneva Park; and counsels over 20,000 people in several community development programs.

General Function:

Oversees serving of food to guests; ensures servery and dining room are cleaned and reset properly after each meal, ensures nutrition bars are cleaned, sanitized and stocked regularly.


  • Demonstrate strong support and commitment to the mission and core values of the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka and the YMCA in Canada.

  • Demonstrate strong support and commitment to serving the membership, facility users and all program participants of the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka.

  • Hiring of all dining room staff with the consent of the Executive Chef according to budget.

  • Disciplinary action with staff will be discussed with the Executive Chef.

  • Checking with the Chef or Sous Chef on the number of lines to be used for buffets well in advance of service.

  • Offers suggestions on alternative set-ups for buffets.

  • The appearance of all buffets and trains staff how to properly maintain a buffet (cleanliness of tables, utensils etc.)

  • Checks agendas, memos and meal count sheets daily for changes and ensures dining room is clean, tidy and set up accurately.

  • Schedules staff according to business, allows one server for every 75 guests for dinner and one for every 50 guests for the morning shift, schedules 2 servers for every 20 guests in a banquet sit down dinner.

  • Suggests and provides accurate costs for any improvements to the dining room or food services areas.

  • Provides direct supervision of dining room service during special events such as weddings, banquets and receptions.

  • Prepares daily task list and follows up to ensure completion.

  • Ensures meals are served efficiently and on time.

  • Ensures all nutrition bars are set up and maintained.

  • Ensures clean and proper set-ups in servery and staff room.

  • Ensures changes are made to the menu board as required.

  • Prepares and arranges tables, cards and room set-up for incoming groups, banquets, buffets.

  • Takes appropriate action for special guest requests such as flowers or linen colour for the tables.

  • Assists other food service staff as time allows.

  • Must maintain a cheerful attitude with guests and staff that will show and set a standard that everyone can look up to.

  • Adherence to all provincial and federal legislation relevant to job description.

  • Undertakes other reasonable tasks in support of YMCA Geneva Park, which the General Manager may assign from time to time.


  • Post-Secondary Education

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience working in a dining room

  • Knowledge of food preparation

  • Knowledge of formal dining room set-up, linen, cutlery etc.

  • Proven Customer Service Experience

  • Experience in supervising, motivating and delegating

  • First Aid and CPR Certification

  • Must be able to work flexible hours based on client needs

  • Clear Police Reference Check and Vulnerable Sector Screening

  • Mandated training (including AODA, Workplace Violence & Harassment, Health & Safety Awareness, Child Protection, PCI Compliance, etc.) is required before or shortly after commencement of work
