Position & location: part-time, Child Care Cook – Parry Sound High School YMCA Child Care, Parry Sound
The opportunity: To build healthy, strong, connected communities by providing and promoting nourishing and healthy food.
In this role, you will:
- Prepare a five-week rotating menu for child care centre that meets the YMCA Menu Planning Protocol; post any menu changes as they are made.
- Prepare one hot lunch and two snacks per day following the five-week menu.
- Supply special dietary meals if necessary, taking children’s allergies and special parental direction into consideration.
- Maintain food and kitchen inventory; order all food supplies.
- Record food and fridge temperatures as per regulation.
- Handle food and dishes in accordance with the Ministry of Health Regulations.
- Clean and sanitize kitchen equipment daily.
- Clean and sanitize cupboards, fridge and food storage areas on a weekly basis or more as needed.
- Maintain all health & safety requirements.
- Prepare meals in proper quantity in relation to the number of children.
- Assist in supervision of lunch, set-up and lean room to meet needs of activities and programs.
- Move equipment both large and small to undertake cleaning duties.
- Occasional use of computers for administrative support.
- Provide personal care to children, including but not limited to providing first aid, administering medication, monitoring dietary, allergies & medical conditions
- Actively engage with children and always ensure supervision and safety of children in a group setting of up to 15 children independently
- Implement play-based learning in accordance with YMCA Curriculum
- Ensure positive, professional communication with families, staff and volunteers on an ongoing basis
- Demonstrate appropriate behaviours in line with our Mission, Vision and Values
- Adhere to work schedule and provide adequate notice to supervisor regarding unexpected scheduling changes
- Demonstrate flexibility with routines and schedules
- Other duties as assigned
For this role, you bring:
- Minimum 18 years of age
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR (Level C) certification OR completion of certification within first 90 days of employment
- Successful completion of Vulnerable Sector Screening within 6 months of your start date
- Up-to-date immunizations or equivalent in accordance with local public health and Child Care Early Years Act
- Current Safe Food Handler Certificate
- Availability requirements: Monday to Friday, 25 hours per week, between the hours of 7:00am & 6:00pm
- Operation of food services equipment ie. oven, stove, cooking appliances
- Knowledge of children’s nutritional requirements according to Canada’s Food Guide, MEDU and the Ministry of Health legislation
- Passion for working with children and providing quality play-based learning
- Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills with families, staff and volunteers
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time, lift up to 20 kg (44 lbs.), and participate in physical activities
- Ability to work outdoors for at least 2 hours daily year-round, in all weather conditions
