Position Description:
SSEA Overview:
The Severn Sound Environmental Association (SSEA) is a community success story. At the SSEA, we are
committed to ensuring exceptional environmental quality and exemplary stewardship of the Severn Sound
area through sound science, collaboration and partnerships. The SSEA is a Joint Municipal Service Board
under the Municipal Act that serves eight municipalities in the Severn Sound watershed area
(www.severnsound.ca).
The SSEA is seeking a motivated, enthusiastic individual to be a part of our talented team to assist with
development of stewardship initiatives in the Severn Sound watershed. Environmental stewardship is
critical for improving and protecting aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Stewardship can include activities
that improve pollinator habitat, reduce stormwater runoff, improve fish habitat in streams and along
shorelines, and reduce nutrient input to streams and lakes.

Position Overview:
SSEA is seeking applications for one (1) Environmental Stewardship Development Assistant to assist the
Water Scientist with the development of stewardship initiatives. This position, based in Port McNicoll
Ontario, offers a 35-hour work week, with some evenings and weekends required, between the period of
January 3rd, 2022 and February 25th, 2022 (8 weeks). Position and term are dependent on funding
approval.

Status: Seasonal/Contract
Wage: $14.50 per hour, 35-hours per week.

Main Responsibilities:
• Plan and carry out a variety of stewardship initiatives which will include engaging with landowners, farmers,
municipalities and community groups to develop, plan and implement best management practices, undertake plant identification and removal of invasive species, create pollinator habitat and/or result in habitat restoration
• Identify, track, liaise with and align partnership groups, the public, contractors and clients with various tasks
related to stewardship initiatives
• Evaluate project success, write reports, map locations of native and/or invasive species, and develop/review best management practices
• Develop engaging and creative content to share project information and results with stakeholders via social
media (e.g., YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, etc.)
• Apply to external grant funding to secure funds for SSEA projects
• Carry out other duties as assigned and/or required
Duties will be modified to comply with COVID-19 safety protocols as outlined by the Simcoe Muskoka
District Health Unit and provincial restrictions. Staff will be required to work remotely when possible and/or
necessary.

Qualifications and Key Skills:
• College and/or university education in natural resources management, environmental science, biology,
ecology, or a related area of study, combined with relevant experience in environmental monitoring,
management, and outreach
• Experience with project management, creating project budgets and writing grant applications
• Excellent judgement and decision-making skills and the ability to come up with innovative solutions related
to project management
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal)
• Self-motivated, strong ability to work independently and to take initiative on projects
• Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills
• Excellent computer skills including applications such as Zoom, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
• Strong presentation and communications skills, with experience providing information to different audiences using a variety of mediums (e.g., in-person, on-site, via e-mail, virtual presentations)
• Knowledge of the principles of field work, such as accurate data recording, use of technical equipment, and
record keeping
• Knowledge of problem invasive species in the Severn Sound watershed, including identification of plant,
fish, invertebrate and pathogen based invasive species would be an asset
• Ability to comfortably work outdoors in a variety of conditions (on water and land in all types of weather)
• Reliable and willing to work a flexible schedule (overtime, evenings, weekends)
• Valid Ontario Driver’s License (Class G)
• First Aid and CPR certification and Canadian Pleasure Craft Operators Licence along with boat driving
experience are considered assets
• Experience with implementing stewardship projects and with volunteer management would be considered
assets
• Geographic Information Systems (ArcGIS/ArcMap/QGIS) and Ecological Land Classification experience
would be considered an asset
• Must be 30 years of age or under as of contract start date
SSEA offers comprehensive health and safety training.
