POSITION TITLE: Fire Chief
DURATION: Full-Time Permanent

Position Summary:
The Fire Chief is a full-time position for the Wasauksing Fire Department. The Fire Chief
will be accountable for the management, leadership and supervision of volunteer
firefighters. The Fire Chief will be responsible for the overall operation of the fire services,
fire prevention and public education, emergency medical responses, community
emergency planning. Ensure compliance with the Ontario Fire Code, Provincial and
Federal legislation.
The Fire Chief will deliver a training program that meets the needs of all volunteer fire
fighters for Wasauksing First Nation. Establish and maintain a working environment which
promotes positive moral and teamwork.
Duties and Responsibilities:
 Responds to emergencies and assumes command on scene; accept full responsibility
for all fire department activities and services for the first nation;
 Plan, design and deliver fire training courses necessary to meet the needs of volunteer
firefighters and organization as a whole;
 Be prepared to be on call 24/7to respond to all emergencies: fire, vehicular, OPP/APS
assistance;
 Maintain an inventory of equipment, supplies and material required for the fire
department and ensures all firefighting equipment and apparatus are maintained in
good repair and fit for duty;
 Responsible for fire prevention inspections, fire education programs and enforce fire
prevention by-laws;
 Maintain ongoing maintenance and report problems of vehicles and equipment to
ensure reliability and safety before they become a crisis or cause serious damage or
expensive repair;
 Update and implement the Wasauksing Fire Services Community Plan;
 Attend monthly staff meeting;
 Participate in Occupational Health and Safety Committee meetings;
 Practice workplace safety at all times;
 Adhere to all policies and procedures of Wasauksing First Nation and any other
relevant policies and procedures from external agencies and partners
 As per Job Description – Management reserves the right to change or add items to
the job description;
 Performs other duties/tasks as requested;
INTERNAL/EXTERNAL
Qualifications and Educational Requirements:
 Ontario Secondary School Diploma (Grade 12) or acceptable equivalent in education
and experience;
 Ontario Fire College Officer certification;
 Training or experience managing a team is considered an asset;
 Sound practical knowledge of related legislation, policies, procedures, directives and
guidelines for fire services;
 Must possess computer skills, be proficient in Microsoft programs including but not
limited to Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint;
 General knowledge and ability to operate department equipment and apparatus
equipment;
 Ability to speak, read and understand Anishnaabemowin (Ojibway Language) is an
asset
 General knowledge of community services, customs and traditions;
Other Requirements:
 Valid Driver’s License and reliable personal vehicle
 Must provide a drivers Abstract
 This position requires the individual to work with various families, youth and
children. Wasauksing First Nation requires the individual to provide a vulnerable
sector check
