1 Year Contract

Wave Fibre Mill is a small semi-worsted spinning mill that processes fleece for small Canadian farms. Also, using fleece from Ontario regenerative farms, the mill weaves and knits yardage and produces a line of high-end, natural fibre, plastic-free, local garments, accessories and housewares.

We currently have available one full-time, one-year position with the Ontario Youth Internship Program and are looking for a Textile and Material Fabricator. As an intern, the successful candidate will be trained on all equipment and mill processes.

 Location: Seguin, Ontario at the Parry Sound Municipal Airport

 Job Description:

The intern will undertake a variety of tasks to complete the project of “farm to fashion” under one roof. Duties the intern will learn include, but are not limited to: taking raw fleece from local Ontario farms and learning how to process it into yarn, learning how to operate all mill equipment, communicating with farmers, documenting and recording intake, and fabricating mill product into garments, accessories and housewares. We hope to have the intern specifically excel in the operation of the weaving looms.

 Skills:

  • High mechanical aptitude
  • Experience drafting patterns, cutting and sewing an asset
  • Experience with fibre and weaving/sewing equipment an asset
  • Must be able to read and write English
  • Must have basic math skills (add, subtract, multiply and divide)
  • Must pay attention to detail, be willing to learn and take safe initiatives
  • Be a self-motivated team player with the ability to work independently
  • Possess strong time management, written and verbal communication skills
  • Be able to work around animal fibre (sheep wool, alpaca, mohair, etc.)
  • Be able to work around machine grease, oils and soaps, etc., in a mill setting
  • Must be able to lift, carry, bend, stand and climb stairs

Criteria:

  • Be under the age of 30
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Have not previously participated as a youth intern in FedNor’s Regional Economic Growth Through Innovation or in any other federal or provincial internship program with pay for a period of six months or more.
  • Reside in Northern Ontario or be willing to move to the region for the period of the internship.
  • Have recently graduated within the last three (3) years with a degree, diploma or certificate from a recognized post-secondary institution.

Compensation:

This full-time position is partially funded by the Northern Ontario Youth Internship Program (NOYIP), administered by Nord-Aski Regional Economic Development Corporation.
