UTILITY WORKER/ GENERAL

PARKS & RECREATION/WASTE
MANAGMENT
POSITION TITLE: Utility Worker (this is a shared position between Parks &
Recreation/Public Works)
REPORTS TO: Director of Operations
Public Works Manager
The Municipality of McDougall is seeking a Utility Worker/ General Labourer – Open until position filled .
This is a shared position with Parks & Recreation and Waste Management Departments. The individual would be required to provide a variety of maintenance and repair services at municipal facilities, parks and beaches, as well as monitoring the use of the municipal waste transfer station.
This is a full time position with a full benefit package and pension plan.

POSITION SUMMARY:
To provide a variety of maintenance and repair services at municipal parks and beaches for the
safety and convenience of the public.
To provide a variety of maintenance and repair services at the municipal rink for the safety and
convenience of the public.
To act as general labourer including maintenance of municipal facilities as required.
To monitor the use of the municipal waste transfer station and the landfill site to ensure that
municipal by-laws, regulations and policies are being complied with.
CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

5. Privacy: Maintain confidentiality of rate payers, fellow employees and council in
accordance with the (Municipal) Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act
(MFIPPA). Last Amended 2016-04-05.
DESCRIPTION OF DETAILED DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Responsible for conducting general maintenance functions at municipal parks and
beaches such as:
– Cutting, trimming and fertilizing all grass areas.
– Brushing and trimming.
– Placement and removal of docks and rafts.
– Painting and varnishing of buildings and fences.
– Replacement of worn planks, broken windows.
– Emptying garbage containers at all parks and beaches.

2. Responsible for the necessary maintenance work for the McDougall Recreation Centre
rink with a minimum of supervision. Maintenance work shall include the following:
– Making and maintaining ice on a daily basis, as weather conditions permit. The ice
maintenance operations shall occur between 6:00 a.m. and 12:00 a.m. (generally)
– Ensuring that facility is kept clean and in good repair.
– Ensuring that ice making resurfacer and snowblowing equipment is kept in good
repair and is adequately maintained.
3. Ensures that all damage or vandalism is reported to the Public Works Manager.
4. Monitors the use of municipal transfer station checking to ensure that:
– Only household garbage is disposed of.
– All users have valid permits.
5. Act as general labour including maintenance of municipal facilities such as:
– Painting.
– Replacement of light bulbs.
– Cleanup of outdoor areas.
– Municipal facilities including McDougall Recreation Centre , Nobel Community
Centre, Waubamik Community Centre, Municipal Administration Office and two
Fire Stations.
6. Incumbent is required to supervise or direct the work of summer student.
7. Carries out work assignment using a variety of equipment and machinery plus hand and
power tools. Responsible for the safe and effective use of equipment.
8. Maintain equipment, vehicles and tools in safe operating condition by following
acceptable maintenance and servicing schedules and performing repair/replacement
work.
9. Work is performed under direct supervision of the Public Works Manager. Incumbent is
expected to use initiative and judgement and to work without direct supervision once the
task has been defined.
CREDENTIALS REQUIRED/DESIRED
1. Ability to operate a variety of equipment and tools safety and efficiently. Use knowledge
of safety procedures.
2. Requires valid driver’s license.
3. Excellent physical condition with ability to handle equipment and do heavy lifting.
4. Required to work well with other employees when additional manpower required.
5. Use interpersonal skills with the public to enforce regulations and to provide information.
