Become A Child Development Practitioner with the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka Apprenticeship Training Program

Are you passionate about working with kids?  Do you want to be involved with an organization that’s committed to improving your community?  The YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka Child Care team is pleased to announce that they are actively recruiting Child Care staff and apprentices in their over 75 child care centres across Simcoe County, Muskoka and Parry Sound.

What Is the Child Development Practitioner Apprenticeship Program?

Apprenticeship is a work-based training program for people who want to work in a skilled trade or occupation, like child care. Apprentices are paid while gaining work experience. About 90% of apprenticeship training takes place in the workplace, while the remainder consists of theoretical instruction, usually obtained at a college of applied arts and technology or other approved training delivery agency. Apprenticeship training is delivered in partnership by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU) and the College. Training agreements between apprentices and sponsors, like the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka, are registered by the MTCU in accordance with legislation.

Here are four great reasons to choose an apprenticeship program with the YMCA Child Care team:

  • Get paid while gaining work experience!
  • Get an edge in a competitive job market
  • Learn and master skills in high demand
  • Become part of a nurturing team, make a difference in your community, and grow in a career you love

What YMCA Child Care Educators are Saying About the Apprenticeship Program

“As a single mom, already working in the field of child care, I wasn’t sure when I could find the time to complete my ECE schooling. My supervisor at the time saw my potential and told me about the apprenticeship program. What a gift it was! I was able to keep my full-time position with the YMCA and complete my ECE through Loyalist College. The apprenticeship program has been a wonderful opportunity. I went from being an Assistant ECE to Lead ECE to Supervisor and eventually into my current role as a Community Manager. Without the apprenticeship program and Loyalist College, I’m not sure how I could have been this successful in my career with the YMCA.”

~ Jennifer Reynolds, Community Manager of Child Development and Family Support Services, YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka

“A huge benefit to the apprenticeship program was that I was able to work and get paid throughout the day and then attend school at night. This alleviated a lot of financial stress. The program is quite flexible and allowed me to learn at my own pace. Being a new mom, this was very important to me. I was able to select how many classes I wanted to take at one time, with room to breathe.

The teachers were amazing and very supportive. The program gave me insight and a better understanding of a child’s developmental processes, which I was able to directly apply to my work. There was always a teacher, friend, or co-worker who was willing to support and encourage me. It was a great experience!”

~Alyssa Kingsbury, Supervisor of Child Development and Family Support Programs, YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka
