YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka | Helping Newcomers Adjust to Life in Canada

YMCA Immigrant Services ensures eligible newcomers to Canada receive appropriate English language training and settlement services including assessment of needs, orientation, information and referral, and labour market information in order to feel welcomed in the community and to participate socially, culturally and economically. These services are supported by Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

Our settlement staff team assists newcomers to Canada to settle and adapt to life in Barrie and throughout Simcoe County through the following services:

  • Assistance in completing forms
  • Arrange for interpreters and translators
  • Information on social services, schools, health care, housing and recreational facilities
  • Referrals to education, government and community services
  • Employment counselling

The Settlement Worker in Schools (SWIS) program can provide service for new Canadian children and youth throughout all local schools in The County of Simcoe. The main objective of the program is to assist the child, youth and family to integrate into their school and community. Click here to learn more.

YMCA teachers are here to help you learn English

  • English as a Second language classes
  • Reading-Writing-Listening-Speaking
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Free of charge to eligible participants
  • Canadian Language Benchmark Assessment test required
  • Proof of permanent residence required
  • Free childcare for registered participants
  • Monday to Friday

This project is designed to ease the transition of newcomers that arrive in Ontario. Orientation to Ontario (O2O) provides access to information about settling in Ontario and connecting newcomers to community services after arrival.

This includes:

  • Healthcare
  • Education
  • Housing
  • Working in Canada
