MyY is Camp!

YMCA Day Camps instill positive core values in campers.

By: Courtney, On-Site Coordinator, MyY Innisfil Day Camps

The warm weather finally came and so did YMCA Summer Day Camp Programs!

I returned this year as an On-Site Coordinator at MyY Innisfil, and I’m so grateful to be back in this role. I was looking forward to reconnecting with returning counsellors and campers and to meet the new members of our team. We have a energetic and enthusiastic team and we look forward to making memories with campers each summer!

Teaching YMCA Core Values at MyY Day Camps

What I love most about YMCA Day Camps are the values we try to instill in our campers. The YMCA operates Day Camp Programs around the organization’s core values: caring, honesty, respect, responsibility, and inclusiveness.

YMCA Summer Day Camp Programs encourage campers to reflect these values in their everyday behaviour. Camp counsellors use the YMCA core values to resolve conflict and encourage positive behaviour. I think this is what separates the YMCA Day Camp from any other day camp program. YMCA Day Camps have the ability to influence, encourage and teach campers how to interact with others in a positive, wholesome manner.

Here’s an example of the YMCA core values in action:

Last summer, a group of campers were playing a game on the soccer field and for some reason, one camper was excluded from the game. Before a counsellor went over to check on the camper, another camper walked over to the excluded child, put their arm around him and encouraged him to join in the fun.

It’s the little things that happen on the job that makes it all worth it, and is the reason I am so thrilled to return to the YMCA Day Camp Program.

It’s not too late for your children to join us at camp — give them the opportunity to learn the values of MyY!
